Astronauts Have Bolted Kombucha Samples to the Space Station
違う！これは自家醸造の実験が国際宇宙ステーション(以降ISS)でとんでもない惨事になったいうニュースではありません。これは宇宙空間に直接投げ出して、コンブチャ（昆布茶であはありません。文末参考）がどう回復するかを実験する試みなのです。
Nope, it’s not a home-brewing experiment gone horribly awry in the ISS. It’s an attempt to test the resilience of kombucha, by throwing it directly against the void of space.
このサンプルはまず欧州宇宙機関(以降ESA)に去年送られ、その後宇宙機関がコンブチャの耐久力を記録し、そして宇宙空間でどう反応するかをみるため宇宙に送ることが決定しました。ESAは長年宇宙生物学の実験の一環で、様々な生物(クマムシなど)を用い、基本的にISSの窓から放り出すということを行ってきました。コンブチャの実験のプランは、満18ヶ月宇宙空間にさらし、どれほどバイオフィルムがどれだけ頑丈で、その環境を耐えられるかを調べます。研究者は、そうなると期待しています。
The samples were first sent up the ESA last year, after the space organization noted the hardiness of kombucha and decided to send it up as see how it did. ESA has long done a series of exobiology experiments to see how various life forms (like tardigrades) survive when essentially tossed out of the ISS window. They’ve even had some luck with seeds managing to survive. For the kombucha experiment, though, the plan is to give it a full 18 months in space and see if it forms a hardy enough biofilm to get through it, which researchers say, they expect it to.
この宇宙空間への短期滞在のせいでもしかしたら味が変わるかもしれないと言葉もありませんが、実際宇宙の一部がラズベリー・ライム味になるわけだし、私は人体実験一号としてボランティアします！(ESA電話してね！)
There’s no word on how its sojourn into space might change its flavor, but given the fact that parts of space is said to have a raspberries-and-rum tinged flavor to it, I volunteer as human test subject #1. (Call me, ESA!)

＜コンブチャとは＞
紅茶キノコと呼ばれるモンゴル、ロシアで飲まれる発酵飲料です。誰かがなぜか昆布茶と勘違いしコンブチャという名前で呼ばれるようになりました。よく友人に日本人だからコンブチャ知ってる？と聞かれますが、まったく別物なのです。
